EASTHAM HUMAN SERVICES ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Minutes of November 3, 2010
Present: Mary Sedlock, Gordon Major, Carl Lipton, Elaine Lipton, Judi Izikewicz.
Also present: Sue Canavari and Margaret Phillips who have applied to serve on this committee.
Meeting called to order at 7:05pm by Chairperson Mary Sedlock.
Minutes of Oct. 26,2010: Carl Lipton moved to accept minutes as amended, second Elaine Lipton. Unanimous vote, accepted as amended.
Mary Sedlock met with the Ms. Vanderhoef to discuss what dollar amount we can expect for this years budget requests. She was informed that Ms. Vanderhoef is hoping for $53,500.00, the same as last year. Mary also asked about the $500.00 that we suggested for“Consumer Assistance Council”.that they did not receive. There possibly was a mistake made in the distribution, and they went with the year before numbers.
Mary will request a copy of what was actually given to the asking agencies.
“Outer Cape Health Services” was represented by Walter Phinney, Asst. Director.
Mr. Phinney gave an synopsis of what OCHS is doing and hopes to do in the near future.
9 new providers have been hired.
plans to further expand Provincetown clinic.
adult dental health restorative care.
Bone Density and Mammograms.
approval for another clinic in Chatham.
authorized to open a pharmacy at the Wellfleet facility. The pharmacy will be open to the public, but a discount will be given to OCHS patients.
Healthy weight clinic for children 3-17 yrs of age. Open to the public.
Teen clinic for education on HIV, STS, etc.
88 % of HIV patients on the Cape are seen at OCHS. A new Dr. from St. Vincent's Hospital in New York has been hired for this program.
2 new grants have been written, Diabetic Management care, and Depressed Diabetics.
Q & A
Q. why go to OCHS rather than a private physician?
A. who not why, one stop shopping, many local physicians are not accepting new Mass Health insurance patients.
Q. how are you able to attract providers that others can't?
A. we can connect to National Service Corp. and assist with student loans in return for a certain number of years of service.
Q. are providers from Beth Israel Hospital summer only?
A. for now, but hope to go full time soon.
Q. why should we take some of the small amount of money that is allotted to help the residents of Eastham be given to OCHS? How will it be used?
A. it is put in our “Bucket” to provide health care to non-insured residents.
Q. do you see OCHS as real healthy?
A. yes, a happy place with real growth.
Q. do you hear anything that discourages you at OCHS?
A. yes, it's history. Patients that were upset with us left We are now overstaffed intentionally to create trust. Our volume is 45% higher this July than last.
NEW BUSINESS:
Further discussion about the “Juice Bar”, and its mission. MS. Vanderhoef suggested to Mary, that maybe we should meet with the chairperson of the Recreation Commission so that they can explain some of their programs, that possibly duplicate what the “Juice Bar” is trying to accomplish.
Carl Lipton and Elaine Lipton gave us a brief overview of their on site visit with LCOC. It was asked and explained, how this program overlaps with Homeless Prevention. Overall it was a good visit, with lots of good work being done. Budget training is offered to assist people in getting out of their old lifestyles. They are absolutely seeing families now that time were donors in the past.
Mary will be away next week, Elaine Lipton will moderate, “Independence
House” is our last presentation.
No meeting on the 16th of November. Our next meeting will be on the 23rd and it will be a discussion meeting to go over all our budget requests.
